Icarus can be a hard planet; To defend yourself against creatures and the elements, it is important to have shelter. As well as sheltering inside caves and carved rocks, you can also build a small hut to protect yourself. In this guide, we’re going to go over the basics of building to help you survive.

It is important to keep in mind that since Icarus is session-based, anything you build will disappear once you exit the mission. This means that if you build a Grand Mansion base, it will disappear once you return to space in your shuttle. Let’s see how to unlock construction plans first.

Unlock plans

tech tree with selected wooden wall

Before building your shelter, you will need to unlock building elements, such as roofs, ramps, walls and floors. Due to the branches of the tech tree, you will not be able to unlock all building parts at the same time. Instead, you first need to unlock the thatch or wood beam. Once you have these blueprints, you can continue to unlock additional thatch and lumber pieces. Pieces of thatch will require less material than pieces of wood, but they are less durable and can be destroyed during a storm.

Eventually, you will have access to other types of building materials, which are listed below.

  • rock
  • Concrete
  • Glass
  • Aluminum

Similar to thatch and timber structures, You’ll need to unlock the bundle associated with these materials first before gaining access to the rest of the building pieces. Overall, it’s up to you to decide what type of structure you want. If your current assignment is long, consider building stronger shelters. As thatch is very fragile, it is preferable to use this material only for temporary structures, like a cabin for the night or a small place to take shelter from a storm.

Manufacturing from your inventory

From your inventory, you will be able to craft the construction pieces for which you will unlock blueprints. The crafts are fairly straightforward; all you have to do is click on whatever you want to craft and craft it if you have enough materials.

In fgeneral, Most of the resources you need to craft building parts are easily accessible at the start of the game. With trees, rocks, and shrubs, you should easily be able to build timber, stone, and thatch building pieces. The crafted item will be placed in your inventory and you can place it in the world.

As with everything else in the game, you will gain experience by crafting these items. This is useful if you are trying to level up quickly. By crafting walls, you can gain experience while stocking up on building materials.

How to place construction pieces

open wall placement variation menu, with background structure

Once you have enough building pieces, it’s time to start building. To place a wall, drag it to your shortcut bar from your inventory. The wall equipment will begin the construction process.

Construction pieces will snap into existing structures, allowing you to achieve a nice and uniform construction. Buildings can be free-standing or built against a cliff or mountain. Doing the latter will provide you with a solid wall.

Instead of unlocking the window door frame blueprints, you can simply choose these variations of the regular wall. To open the variants menu, hold “R” with the wall fitted. This will cause the variations menu to open, allowing you to choose multiple options visible in the image above. Since you’ve already made the wall, none of these options will require additional resources. To place windows and doors inside these structures, you will need to unlock the blueprints for each.

Repair your house

Over time, your buildings will start to deteriorate. If a building deteriorates to the point that your roof is destroyed, you can lose valuable items that you have placed inside. The deterioration can be due to several reasons, including:

  • Animal attacks
  • Strong wind
  • Heavy rain
  • Flash
    • this will result in wood and thatch buildings catch fire

Mother nature is relentless and you cannot fight against natural disasters, but you can repair damaged buildings with a hammer. This is a tool that you can unlock from the start of the game. It allows you to repair any structure that has suffered damage.

To use the hammer, you will need to equip it and hit the structure you want to repair. After a few strokes, the structure will be like new.

That’s all there is to know about the basics of building! As you gain more experience, you will be able to create more complex buildings that can protect you in various situations.
