A Raipur farmhouse that houses flamboyant treasures

0

A majestic langur in full military dress welcomes visitors to this farm in Raipur. Don’t worry, it’s not a real primate but the star of a Raseel Gujral floral wallpaper splashed on the living room wall of this sprawling vacation home. The farm is nestled deep in the Chhattisgarh hinterland in the village of Nakati, where the land is owned as much by cattle as by man, and a gentle calm pervades the air. It was this lull that attracted city dwellers in search of retirement.

This Raseel Gujral wallpaper is the centerpiece of the Raipur farmhouse living room

“It was precisely the feeling conveyed by the customers, the need to withdraw,” says Ruchi Gehani, half of Azure Interiors, the Raipur-based company that designed the Rashi Bothra space, the other half of the company adds, “Since being a farm, we wanted to root the aesthetic in nature while maintaining a chic edge.

Raipur Farm: Living room

Duck blue walls, Victorian-style moldings and ocher tiles create an imperial air in the living room. Country Villa Decor’s brown Chesterfield sofas anchor the seating area, easily interlocking with the blue shell.

“The area, which acts as a home theater, was designed to accommodate larger gatherings as it is connected to the lawn. The highlight here is the monkey wallpaper by Raseel Gujral; a humorous juxtaposition against the solemn shell, ”notes Bothra. Gehani adds, “The interior approach has focused on keeping the common spaces connected, to offer flexible spatial configurations. This way the rooms can work independently or together to suit the occasion.

Pilkington UK Production of hydrogen powered architectural glass

0

Pilkington UK has announced the world’s first successful manufacture of architectural glass at its plant in St Helens, UK, using hydrogen.

The trial is a key step in the manufacturer’s plans to decarbonize glass production and has claimed that a full transition to using hydrogen to power the site is possible, the site currently using natural gas.

The change means the float glass furnace – which accounts for the majority of the company’s overall carbon emissions – could operate with dramatically lower emissions.

The objective of the test was to demonstrate that the furnace, in which the glass raw materials are heated to approximately 1600 degrees centigrade, could safely operate at full production without affecting the quality of the product.

Matt Buckley, UK Managing Director of Pilkington UK, which is part of the NSG Group, said:

“The trial was a significant success… It proves that hydrogen is just as capable as natural gas of achieving excellent melting performance, and that it might be possible to operate the furnace with emissions of considerably reduced carbon.

Matt Buckley, UK Managing Director of Pilkington UK, Member of the NSG Group

He continued to add:

“It was in St Helens that the float glass process was developed in 1952, revolutionizing the way glass is made around the world… Today, 70 years later, this trial represents another major milestone for the company. global glass industry and it is fitting that he again pioneered here.

Matt Buckley, UK Managing Director of Pilkington UK, Member of the NSG Group

David Parkin, Director of Progressive Energy and Project Director of HyNet North West added:

“Industry is vital for the economy but difficult to decarbonize. HyNet is focused on removing carbon from industry through a range of technologies, including carbon capture and locking, and the production and use of hydrogen as a low carbon fuel. This test at Pilkington in the UK is an important step in demonstrating that it is possible to use hydrogen to power glass production and provides a valuable model for further testing and implementation. “

David Parkin, Director of Progressive Energy and Project Director of HyNet North West

The three-week trial on the float glass line used around 60 hydrogen tankers, but the longer-term plan is to create a network of hydrogen pipelines to supply major industrial sites, thus avoiding the truck transport.

The initiative is part of the ‘HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching’ project aimed at decarbonising industrial processes in the North West of England.

By 2030, it is expected to reduce 10 million tonnes of carbon per year. In February 2020, the HyNet project received £ 5.3million in funding from BEIS as part of its energy innovation program.

Special report on hops and highways:

0

The editors-in-chief of Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive sit down with the editors of sister publications Asphalt Contractor and Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction in a special LINK Live / Hops & Highways episode to discuss the adoption of the draft. bipartite infrastructure law and what this means for the future of transport and supply chains.

Full text below:

J:After months of debate, Senate lawmakers reached a final deal on the bipartisan $ 1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. The package, called the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, is the culmination of long and painstaking negotiations that spanned months between a bipartisan group of senators and the Biden administration. The group worked on a total of 281 amendments to the 2,702-page bill before it went to a final vote. Overall, the bill includes $ 550 billion in new funding and the renewal of a range of programs that were slated to expire at the end of September.

D: Highlights of the bill include: $ 303.5 billion over five years for federal highways programs, a 35% increase from previous bills. $ 40 billion in resources dedicated to repair, replacement and rehabilitation of bridges. The bill also provides for a $ 118 billion bailout of the Highway Trust Fund from the general treasury fund – a huge win for the highway construction industry.

B: The bill includes $ 55 billion for water supply projects focused on modernizing infrastructure that is the largest investment in drinking water in our country’s history, $ 66 billion for the passenger and freight rail transportation, $ 65 billion to rebuild the power grid, $ 65 billion to expand broadband Internet access, $ 39 billion to modernize and expand transit systems and much more .

M: This bill will bring significant economic benefits to communities and improvements to our roads and bridges will provide a smoother ride for trucks, agriculture and other industries that primarily use roads, which could also reduce the time spent behind the wheel. Let’s have a cheers at this!

J: Unfortunately, congestion on our roads is a huge problem and hopefully this increase in infrastructure funding will solve it. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, in 2019, congestion added 37 minutes to what would otherwise have been a 30-minute commute in a typical American city. Congestion on our major highways resulted in operating costs of nearly $ 75 billion and lost 1.2 billion hours of lost productivity.

B: The American Society of Civil Engineers also indicates that there will be a 104% annual increase in freight movement in the United States from 2016 to 2045. This increase in freight movements poses even more challenges to already aging infrastructure. from the country. In order for the country to benefit from the rapid economic growth, the capacity of the country’s freight transport system must be increased at major highways, gateways, rail facilities and ports.

M: This infrastructure investment will hopefully improve the reliability of existing intermodal connectors, of which around 68% are congested and 56% have poor pavements. Further delaying investment in repairs and new construction will only become more expensive and time consuming.

D: Our failing infrastructure was exposed earlier this summer when the Hernando DeSoto Bridge was closed. This bridge carries I-40 traffic across the Mississippi River between Tennessee and Arkansas and was suddenly closed on May 11 when engineers from the Arkansas Department of Transportation discovered a fractured support beam during a routine inspection. Since then, new information has come to light, revealing that damage to the bridge was visible and evident as early as 2016.

B: While this bridge has been closed, truck drivers have to take alternative routes, making an eight-minute detour. This adds an average daily cost to the trucking industry of $ 2.4 million per day, according to the American Transportation Research Institute.

J: The I-40 bridge is not the only bridge in difficulty. According to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, 1 in 3 bridges in the United States is currently structurally deficient. That’s 220,000 bridges. What this really means is that motorists cross bridges needing repairs 171.5 million times a day.

D: At the current rate, it would take almost 40 years to repair this current backlog of structurally deficient bridges. The estimated cost to repair or replace the 45,000 bridges in need of repair, based on US Department of Transportation average price data, would be $ 41.8 billion.

J: The good news is that the infrastructure bill includes this $ 40 billion for bridge repair and rehabilitation over five years, which is the biggest investment dedicated to bridges since the system was built. of interstate highways. And we’ll drink from that!

M: While bridges will be a key priority in this legislation, there will be many other projects that will improve our failing infrastructure. If Congress passes the bill, the money will start through existing federal channels to states and cities as early as October.

D: We don’t have a lot of details yet on the projects that will come out of this bill, but we do know that Alaska has been a big winner from a projects perspective. US Senator Lisa Murkowski was one of the main negotiators of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and her state will receive funds for the reconstruction of the Shakwak Highway, the road connecting the Alaska border to Haines Junction in Canada. Money will also be distributed to the Puerto Rico Highway Program.

J: Another project that came out of the bill would be a major undertaking to connect 12 military bases in five southern states. Funds would be allocated as part of the bill to extend Interstate Highway 14 its 25 miles near Fort Hood, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Augusta, Georgia. The proposed 1,300-mile route extends between Interstate 10 and 20 and would primarily improve existing roads.

B: There are many large and complex projects that will stretch over the years, such as a new Hudson River rail tunnel connecting New Jersey and Penn Station to Manhattan. New York State airports are expected to receive combined federal funding of $ 937 million. There’s also a pipeline of road, transit, and other projects that every state can quickly jump to to make a quick impact.

M: The legislation would set aside millions of dollars for individual projects across the country, including $ 1 million for Great Lakes restoration, $ 24 million for San Francisco Bay, $ 106 million for Long Island Sound and $ 238 million for the Chesapeake Bay.

J: The $ 550 billion in new funding would clearly hit Americans across the country with many industries and parts of the country benefiting from the bill. California, the most populous state, would get a minimum of $ 39 billion, including $ 25.3 billion for highways and $ 4.2 billion for bridge replacement and repair over five years. Texas would get even more for the $ 26.9 billion highway projects, the White House said. He would also get $ 537 million for bridge projects.

B: The White House has a full list of where the funding will go if this bill passes and we’ll post the backgrounder for you to check out if you’re into that sort of thing. We are really very happy to see infrastructure financing as a top priority in the country and we will drink to it!

D: In addition to the benefits for our current physical infrastructure, this bill will also provide other economic impulses. President Biden has reportedly said this bill will create millions of good union jobs across the country in towns, small towns, rural and tribal communities and that 90% of the jobs created will not require a college degree. In fact, the White House says an average of 2 million jobs per year are expected to be created over the next decade as a result of this legislation.

J: The problem is who will do the work? In the construction industry, second-quarter data from the US Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction showed that 88% of contractors have difficulty finding workers, forcing them to pull out of projects. Of those who said they had difficulty finding skilled labor, 35% turned down work due to shortages of skilled labor. If we don’t have the workers, how can we move these projects forward?

D: Earlier this year, President Biden proposed the U.S. Jobs Plan that would give $ 100 billion to fund priorities such as the expansion of registered apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships, especially for women and those in color, comprehensive support for displaced workers, sectoral training programs focused on target industries and vocational training for those involved in justice. Unfortunately, the bipartisan agreement left this funding behind.

M: Context of the driver shortage

B: One thing we were excited to see in this bill was a provision to address the truck driver shortage. The bill creates a pilot apprenticeship program for drivers under the age of 21. We’re going to have a drink!

J: It took years for Congress to finally support its long-envisioned goal of legislation to improve the country’s ailing infrastructure, but they did. So what’s the next step? After passing the $ 1.2 trillion infrastructure package, the Senate approved the plan for a $ 3.5 trillion budget resolution, which gives the green light to funding in key areas in accordance with the legislative agenda. Of the president. The House, which will return to work on Monday, will also need to approve the bill and a budget resolution before Congress can develop and pass final legislation. Neither bill will hit President Biden’s desk for weeks, if not months.

0

The New York City Design and Construction Department (DDC) today issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking to identify up to 15 companies to provide construction management services for the construction of public buildings New York City Municipalities as part of the agency’s Project Excellence Program.

The call for tenders was published on August 17 and can be downloaded here. A virtual pre-proposal conference will take place on September 9. Responses to the tender for construction management services are expected by September 24.

“Construction management contracts emphasize the principles expressed in DDC’s strategic plan for construction excellence, which is our roadmap for faster and more efficient project delivery,” said Thomas Foley, SDC Deputy Commissioner for Public Buildings. “We have made several important changes to the next round of construction management contracts to provide incentives and incentives for businesses to meet the City’s goals. Building professionals who want to make a difference are strongly encouraged to respond to our call for tenders and help build the next generation of large public buildings.

DDC is the main agency responsible for the design and delivery of the city’s civilian infrastructure as well as public buildings, including fire stations, libraries, community health centers, recreation centers, theaters , museums and more for over 20 city agencies as well as many cultural institutions that receive city funding.

DDC’s Project Excellence Program prequalifies companies to provide construction management services for its public building projects. Once they are on the pre-qualified list, companies can be deployed more quickly in individual projects as needed, thereby reducing lead times for construction management services while ensuring the highest standards. levels of quality and professionalism. The agency previously contracted 24 construction management companies for the current program cycle, which will expire in 2022.

Recent examples of public buildings completed by the agency as part of its Project Excellence program include the new fire station for Rescue Company # 2 in Brooklyn (top photo). Buildings currently under construction under the program include the new Far Rockaway Library in Queens and the Staten Island Districts 1 and 3 Sanitation Garage at Fresh Kills.

For the next cycle of the program, the agency will look to enter into a three-year contract with up to 15 companies to provide construction management services for new construction, major renovations, and system upgrades and replacements. . Three categories of construction management contracts are requested depending on the size (estimated construction cost) of the projects for which the services are to be provided:

Companies can propose more than one category by submitting a single response to the RFP. If a company submits a proposal for more than one category, DDC reserves the right to assign the nominator to a category based on their experience, ability and the best interests of the program. No company will be awarded more than one contract, regardless of the number of categories for which the company submits a proposal.

This series of construction management contracts will include full, partial and consultancy services. The contracts have been adjusted from the previous round to encourage companies to meet the City’s objectives for the project excellence program:

  • All services will be on the time card (direct salary with multiplier for overheads and profits) only (previous contracts included an expense curve for costs for profits).
  • Direct wage rates will be based on actual wages (previous contracts included the maximum allowable direct wage rates).

DDC strongly encourages participation in the project excellence program by minority and women owned enterprises (M / WBE) and sets important requirements for the participation of M / WBE in its projects. Soon choose from pre-designed floor plans to rebuild your CHB freestanding home

0

Recipients of Chandigarh Housing Council (CHB) independent houses, who plan to rebuild their housing units, will soon be able to choose from a set of pre-designed plans, ending the need for building plan approvals.

More than 600 beneficiaries will benefit from the option that CHB is in the advanced phase of deployment.

For years, beneficiaries have sought permission to demolish and rebuild their homes due to their dilapidated condition or modern requirements, but the current process for obtaining permits is cumbersome and involves several steps.

“To facilitate rapid construction without bureaucratic delays, the council will come up with a set of construction plans for each category of detached houses. All of these plans will be uploaded to the CHB website and beneficiaries will be able to choose one of them, ”said Yashpal Garg, CEO of CHB.

If the beneficiary wishes to opt for a separate floor plan, he will have to follow the usual procedure of prior approval of the construction plan. In either case, the successful tenderer will need to obtain the council’s certificate of completion.

Be ready in a month

Standardized construction plans are in the final stages of preparation and should be available within a month. “The architecture branch is working to finalize the plans as soon as possible. These will be uploaded to the CHB website after approval by the Chairman of the Board, ”Garg said.

In particular, the board of directors adopted the proposal for standardized plans in December of last year. These were then taken over by the UT town planning department, but did not progress for nearly eight months.

“But at the meeting last month it was made clear that the board has incorporated changes as needed and can publish these designs themselves. After approval from the planning department, CHB began work to issue the drawings, ”Garg said.

The administration had authorized needs-based changes to CHB housing units last year after relaxing the building rules in Chandigarh.

The said relaxations were recommended by a committee made up of CHB officers, UT administration and a representative of the CHB Flats Welfare Federation. Finally, these were issued on February 15, 2019.

Friendly initiatives of recent beneficiaries

This latest initiative is part of a series of measures taken by CHB to streamline its operations and improve services to beneficiaries.

Recently, it implemented an electronic office system in all of its branches to minimize the movement of physical files, especially in complex ongoing issues.

Apart from this, the board launched an online service for the payment of all dues and also made appointments available online.

Beneficiaries can now also request changes as needed online. “We are working to bring more services online, such as transfer of ownership and CNP. It can take about three months, ”Garg said.

It was the springboard for the plan developed by the studio, but it was interpreted with their unique design sensibility. “We sought to engage in a design that would create an international hospitality experience, thereby attracting a clientele that appreciates coffee culture,” says Arora. The idea was to create an outdoor space filled with nature with a relaxed vibe that allowed guests to linger over their meals. The all-day dining room that spanned the interior must have echoed a similar philosophy. Continuity has been ensured in the interiors, where one part has been devoted to coffee and the other, approached by sliding shutters, to a private dining room. A small entrance leads to the wine bar, with shelves that run along the long fluted bar. In this space, there is a community table covered with green stone, associated with high chairs. It is this unveiling and discovery of spaces that enhance the experience of diners as they move inside, each layer providing a different atmosphere.

Go green

The whole forms a united and coherent space thanks to the use of a monochrome green, which joins the idea of a place respectful of nature during the day. At night, it envelops the crowd in an intimate, lively and dimly lit pub atmosphere. “The idea of balancing the vibe of coffee in the morning, a late afternoon or evening snack and a bar in the evening helped us establish the neutral details,” says Arora.
